5 Racing Tips from a Real-Life Racer

I had the fortune of meeting and racing with many generous people in the early 2000s. These mentors openly shared their hard-earned tips and tricks. And this information helped me progress to the expert motorcycle class before a nasty accident injured my hand.

When I look back there are five things that made a difference in my racing that I would like to share with you too – pass it forward, if you will. These real-world tips can improve your times in any realistic racing game like Forza Motorsport, Project CARS and others.

#1: Settle the Suspension Before the Corner

As you approach a corner there is a lot to do. We want to take note of our surroundings and braking markers, move to the outside, and get most of the braking done.

The biggest thing is to make sure we do all of that before we start cornering.

We want things to be settled and balanced as we turn because cornering is going to take a lot of traction. Anything unnecessary like last minute moves to the outside or heavy braking past turn-in points will reduce cornering ability.

Why is exit speed so important? How much of a difference does it make?

That’s what we are going to answer in this lesson…

Overview of Exit Speed

Exit speed is how fast you are going as you leave the turn. Simple enough.

Exit speed is important because many turns lead onto a straight section of the track. When we get more speed out of a turn we get to carry that bonus speed the entire length of the straight.

That means if you sacrifice a little speed going into a turn and exit with an extra 2 mph, then you will have an extra 2 mph at the end of the straight.

Which would you rather have: extra speed through the beginning of a turn, or extra speed for hundreds of feet after a turn?

The second option is clearly the better deal. Let’s look at some numbers to get a better sense of the impact.

Suspension Tuning Explained

In this course Dave Lacey, founder of the Fast & Clean Racing group, will take you through three main sections:

  • Tires and Alignment
  • Controlling Weight Transfer, and
  • Enhancing Grip.

Dave and I enjoyed putting this together even though it took about 5 times longer than we expected! That’s probably because the course is packed full of animations and explanations — we wanted it to be the “go-to” tuning guide for Forza players.

What to Expect

The course has style similar to others here at Gallium Racing School – detailed information explained in clear terms. Each video is five minutes or less so you can keep a good pace through the lectures. You also get a tuning checklist (PDF) for you to download and use as you build your setups.

All the videos are available instantly after you log in. We had a lot of students go through the class over the weekend and the feedback so far has been great. Enroll now to get a head start on everyone else!

Did you ever wonder what all the settings do in the tuning menu? Well you can put the confusion to rest! We have a new, free class introducing the basics of tuning in Forza Motorsport and Horizon. This will be taught by Dave Lacey, a great guy and creator of the Fast and Clean Racing Group. Like all quality classes, this one has been months in the making but you can sign up here to get an email when it’s open.

Speaking of tuning in Forza, we just updated the ForzaTune 6 app to include drag racing, off-road tuning for Horizon 3 and gearing improvements. You can get the details on my post at the official ForzaTune blog.
